The Buffalo National River begins as a trickle in the Boston Mountains, where it flows north and then eastward through the Ozark Mountains until it merges 150 miles later with the White River at Buffalo City.
The upper Buffalo, where Ponca and the Boxley Valley is located, offers some of the finest scenic beauty. With its massive towering bluffs, beautiful waterfalls, wildlife, wildflowers and remote unspoiled location, the upper Buffalo River wilderness is surely one of the finest outdoor destinations. In 1972, Congress designated it as America’s first national river. This unique status protects the Buffalo from commercial or residential development, along with other destructive operations thus preserving its scenic beauty and natural wild state forever. *Note that the first 4 maps above apply to areas of the Buffalo National River that should be only floated by expert floaters. These stretches are only rarely floatable, but when they are they challenge the most expert floaters. Not only is the river violent, the areas are quire remote and difficult to access, making emergency rescue efforts difficult. Novice and average floaters should not attempt these stretches.
